OUTDOOR KITCHENS Many houses in early St. Augustine had outdoor kitchens. When people cooked outside, the house was kept cool because the smoke did not come into the house. This was a wonderful idea!

SOLDIERS In early St. Augustine, most men were soldiers. This job did not pay much money. Soldiers had to risk their lives and work long hours at the fort. Their families were very poor and did not own many things.
