If the customer insists on removing a vehicle without surrendering tags, process customer's request and advise they must turn tags within 5 days after the cancellation of insurance. Explain the SC UM Enforcement fee and can it be removed from the policy? 

The charge is $2.00 per vehicle for the UM Enforcement Fund.

  • Uninsured Motorist Fee.
  • This is a coverage level fee assessed for all SC rated policies with UM coverage. Eligible vehicles are assessed $1.00 per vehicle at new business and $1.00 per vehicle at renewal ($2.00 total per year). The fee is to be refunded when flat cancel or when the vehicle and/or UM is deleted flat.
  • The process is controlled by the Tax-Fee-Surcharge Table.
  • The fee provides funds for the cost of administering and enforcing South Carolina Uninsured Motorist Laws.

  • Child and/or Student Exception: 
    • If the insured’s child has a vehicle located at a different address within the state,
      • the vehicle can be rated on the insured’s policy if it is a multi-vehicle policy, and the address is known. The child can be of any age.

Explain the criteria to insure a vehicle owned by all others 

The car can be added if ALL of the following statements are true:

  • The insured and drivers listed on the policy are the sole drivers of the vehicle and the vehicle is garaged at the insured's residence.
  • There must be a written agreement to purchase the vehicle. If there is no written agreement, the vehicle cannot be added. Proof of the agreement is not needed.
  • This is not a "Rent to Own" vehicle. See NY Exception.
  • There must be agreement to transfer the title once the car is paid. No follow up is necessary.
  • If the insured is making payments to the owner OR to a finance company, the owner must be listed as Other Party to Notify. Sales will document the lienholder information in the last Jury.
    • FL Note: The owner must be listed as Interested Party and the finance company as the lienholder in FL rated policies.
  • If the owner of the vehicle is deceased and there is agreement from the applicant to transfer the title of the vehicle to their name within 30 days, we can bind the policy. No follow up is necessary.
