What is the difference between a break and a time-out and when we use each one?

A break is suggested by a counselor when a resident is showing signs of escalation and is an opportunity for the resident to take some space away from the milieu. A time-out is when a resident is directed verbally or physically (via an escort) directed to move to a safe space away from the milieu in order to regulate because their current behaviors are significantly disrupting the milieu or present a safety concern.
