What cannot happen to energy?

Cannot be created nor destroyed.

100

Give an example of kinetic energy.

A moving car, a kicked soccer ball or a rolling skateboard. Various

Why is electricity so important to our modern world?

Answers vary - There are many uses of electricity that make our lives better

100

This is when light energy from the Sun is converted directly into electricity.

Solar energy

100

What is electrical energy that is moving?

Current

200

What are two things that can happen to energy?

Transferred (given to another object) or transformed (change the type of energy.

200

Which form of energy travels in waves through space?

Hint: it is the only energy we can see.

Light
200

What are the three fossil fuels?

Coal, oil, natural gas

200

This method of producing electricity uses the energy from water flowing downhill to spin turbines and generators.

Hydroelectricity

200

Describe two ways to increase the brightness of lights in a circuit.

Increase the batteries or decrease the lights.

300

What is energy?

The ability to do work. It makes things happen. It allows things to move or change.

300

Which type of energy powers our body?

Chemical

300

What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources?

Renewable resources can be replaced in one lifetime.

300

Describe wind energy and its reliability.

It takes energy of moving air to spin the blades of a turbine causing a generator inside the turbine to spin and produce electrical energy. It is not reliable as it is not always windy.

300

What are the basic parts of a circuit?

Battery, wires, and load (light)

400

What kind of items in the home use the most energy and how can we reduce the amount of electricity we use?

Things that produce heat use a lot of electricity. I can reduce this usage by turning off the lights, not using the heater constantly or hanging clothes out to dry.

400

What is the natural form of the energy caused by the movement of tiny particles?

Lightning

400

Explain what William Kamkwamba created, how he did it and how it changed his life.

He created a windmill from old bike parts and used it to pump water during a famine and to eventually produce electricity.

400

Explain what Biomass is and how it is used to produce electricity.

This energy uses organic waste materials to produce electricity. (Organic waste is waste that has come from living things – plants or animals).

400

Describe the difference between conductors and insulators.

Conductors allow current to pass through while insulators do not.

500

What is a contraption or device which uses many different types of energy and forces in a chain reaction?

Rube Goldberg Machine

500

What are the two forms of stored energy?

Gravitational and Elastic

500

How is electricity produced in a coal power plant?

The coal is burned, water is heated to become steam, the steam turns a turbine which turns a generator which produces electricity. The water is then cooled again to repeat the process.
500

Name and describe two ways to produce electricity that have not been mentioned yet.

(We have mentioned biomass, solar, wind, hydroelectricity, and fossil fuels)

Options include: nuclear, geothermal and ocean energies.

500

Explain how a wire is designed to transfer electricity while keeping you safe. Include in your answer why a frayed cord would be dangerous.

A Wire is a conductive material wrapped in an insulator. This allows current to travel but not leave the wire. A frayed cord would expose the conductive material.
