For three days, a thick darkness covered all of Egypt. The darkness was so intense that the Egyptians could not see one another or even move from their places. However, Bnei Yisrael had light in their homes, showing that Hashem was protecting them while punishing Egypt.

The reason for the darkness was because there were some Jews who didn’t want to leave Egypt at all. Those Jews ended up dying in privacy so the Egyptians couldn’t see.
