POV stands for...
What is point of view?
A conflict is...
The problem or issue in a story.
What is dramatic irony?
When the reader knows something the characters don't.
In Button Button, this character had the main POV.
Who is Ms. Norma Lewis
Think back to Norma and Arthur Lewis. What did they argue about that created conflict between them?
If they should press the button or not.
What is the dramatic irony that the readers know that the police in "Lamb to the Slaughter" don't?
That Mary killed her husband.
In Button Button, how would the story end if it was it was from Mr. Arthur Lewis's POV?
He would have died randomly.
In "Lamb to the Slaughter" name one way conflict is increased between Mrs. and Mr. Maloney.
Mr. Maloney's apethy towards his wife.
Mr. Maloney's confession.
Ms. Maloney killing her husband.
If we re-read Button Button, what would be the big dramatic irony in that story that we know but the characters don't?
That the button kills Arthur.
In Button Button, would there be more or less tension in the story if it was from Arthur's (husband's) perspective? And why?
There would be less because readers wouldn't know about Norma's growing curiosity. Norma's choice to push the button at the end would just be a surprise.
Let's say two people are fighting. Use your imagination: How could you introduce additional conflict to the fight that would add more tension?
Did it add more tension?
What is the point of having dramatic irony in a story?
(Hint: think tension and suspense)
Dramatic irony makes situations have more tension/suspense. We wonder if characters will figure out what we know and we wonder how characters will react.
Consider a story where a student gets put into ISS because they were skipping class. Which perspective would have more tension/suspense? And why?
Teacher, Student, Principal.
Student because they would have the tension/suspense of getting caught. Everyone else just suddenly finds out the student skiped.
What happens when a story does not have a conflict?
This is not possible. A story always must have a conflict otherwise it is a description.
In Shrek, what is the dramatic irony that Fiona knows but Shrek doesn't?
That Fiona is cursed to be an ogre. And true love's kiss is the only way to break her curse.
