Where should your child be by 8:20 each day (or 8:45 on Tuesdays)? Be specific.

Students should be in the classroom, unpacked, sitting, and settled by 8:20 (8:45) each morning so that they may begin the day with confidence and ease. If your child is walking through our classroom doors after 8:25, they will be marked tardy.

How will fifth graders celebrate BIRTHDAYS this year in class?

Each child will have the option of participating in a Wednesday Birthday Share - a moment to share with the class something about themselves on (or around) their special day. Schedule is on the website; kids have noted reminders for themselves in their monthly planners.

Share three genres of writing your fifth grader will be diving into this year...

Narrative, informational, argumentative, memoir, and creative.

What should you do if you'd like to know more about your child’s homework responsibilities each night (whether they were in class or absent)?

Students write their nightly responsibilities in their PLANNERS Monday-Thursday. More details can be found on our Google Classroom starting this week, but ask your child to take you there and show you.

What should you do if you notice your child has spent over 20 minutes on their math practice homework and they still have a long way to go?

Have them stop, knowing they did their best, and encourage them to check in with Erin (or Chelsea) the next morning. Then send a quick email to let us know what went down.

What happens when students forget to do their homework, turn in incomplete work, or leave materials at home?

They will receive a hug, first, to remind them that mistakes are healthy and that we know they’ll grow from it. Then, they’ll fill out an “Oops!” reminder slip to be signed by them and you. This is NOT punitive! It’s simply a reminder for our kiddos and a heads-up for parents!

What should you do if your kid continues choosing books in the same genre or books that seem "too easy" for them?

Nothing! We encourage trying out new types of books, but let's celebrate that they're reading. Research says that a love of reading is nurtured when children dive into pleasurable, fun, engaging pages of their choice. We'll be challenging them in class through our all-class novels and book clubs.

If your child falls into a pattern of incomplete assignments, missing materials, and has trouble completing work independently, what approach do we suggest you try first to make sure they are staying on track?

Guide them by asking questions rather than doing the work or organizing for them. “Have you placed your work to be turned in tomorrow in the front pocket of your binder?” or “Hey, did you finish EVERY problem for that math practice? Looks like you didn’t show your work on #3” puts the power in their hands to give it their best.
