James Naismith was a teacher who invented basketball so his students could get exercise indoors. He hung two peach baskets on opposite sides of a gym and told the players they must get the ball in the hoop to score. The players ran with the ball, hit, and tackled each other. Many players were injured so he made new rules: 1) if you hit another player, it's a foul. 2) you can't run with the ball.
