This waterway once contained part of the Washington City Canal before it was filled in the late 19th century. It is threatened by pollution due to antiquated combined sewage systems and urban runoff. In 1971, it became illegal to swim here. To improve water quality, over 35,000 mussels have placed here as of 2019.
