I do not want to hurt feelings
I do not know what to say!
I am uncomfortable talking about this!

Performance Expectation vs Reality

  • Kelly is your direct report and has worked as part of the Banquet team for the past two years. She has expressed she wants to grow her career and is seeking a promotion to the next level.
  • You do not think they are ready for the promotion because they have not consistently performed at a senior level.
  • Kelly believes she has checked off all the boxes as it relates to performing at a senior level and it is time to get a promotion.

TASK: Discuss and respond to the Start with the Heart questions from the perspective of the supervisor and develop an “and” statement.

Coaching Up: Leadership Style Differences

  • After 5 years, Holly, the senior leader of your department and your boss, is retiring.
  • You have been a team member with the company for 20 years.
  • Holly’s leadership style was collaborative and she often sought perspective and insight from all of her direct reports before making decisions.
  • Ryan is the senior leader that has been assigned to replace Holly. Ryan has worked with the company for 15 years and is familiar with several people on the team.
  • Fast forward 60 days.  Ryan is sharing updates in a team meeting and shares new internal process changes that will be effective immediately. Ryan has previously not shared information related to this upcoming change with you or anyone on the team.
  • Ryan invites the team to reach out if there are questions.
  • You decide to follow up with Ryan to discuss your concerns about the recent decision. During the conversation, Ryan interrupts you repeatedly while talking and eventually says “This is how it is going to be. When I need your opinion, I will ask.”
  • You leave the meeting feeling offended, devalued, and uncomfortable with Ryan’s style.
  • After a few more weeks and repeated incidents of a similar nature, you decide to try talking to Ryan again regarding your concerns.
  • STATE your path.

PTO Requests

  1. Kelly did not submit her PTO request in a timely manner. You, her direct supervisor, doesn't want to decline the request because it is a "vacation" away, but then other team members have to jump in to take on the load which will also impact overtime.

TASK: Discuss and respond to the Start with the Heart questions from the perspective of the supervisor and develop an “and” statement.

Time and Attendance

ROLE PLAY

You are the leader of your department. Your team member, Ryan, is often late getting to work. You have tolerated it for the past year, but your workload has increased, and you need all the help you can get, especially at the start of the day. With Ryan coming in late, it is starting to affect your ability to get your job done. You need to talk to Ryan.

Got Favoritism?

  • Each season the process to prep for ski season includes tight deadlines and significant pressure. Sarah, the supervisor, has been increasingly relying on Patrick for key tasks, often assigning him the most visible or challenging components. She frequently talks with him privately, and during team meetings, she often defers to his opinions and praises his contributions more overtly than others.
  • Mark, who has been with the company longer than Patrick and has a strong performance record, feels consistently sidelined. He's noticed that his suggestions are often met with less enthusiasm from Sarah, and he rarely gets the same level of direct feedback or recognition as Patrick.
  • Emily, while not directly affected in the same way as Mark, has observed the dynamic and feels a growing sense of unease about the fairness within the team. Patrick, meanwhile, is focused on his work and likely unaware of the negative perceptions brewing among his colleagues.
  • TASK: You are Mark and you realize you need to talk with Sarah. STATE your path.

Unequal Burdens

Liam has been consistently putting in extra hours, often staying late to troubleshoot issues. He's observed that Chloe, while present during working hours, frequently takes longer breaks, seems distracted, and often needs more time to complete her assigned tasks. Liam finds himself regularly picking up the slack, either by taking on additional parts of Chloe's work or by re-doing work he feels aren't up to standard.

Liam is growing increasingly frustrated. He believes he's carrying an unequal share of the workload, impacting his own work-life balance and overall job satisfaction. He's hesitant to speak to Chloe directly, fearing it could create an awkward or confrontational situation. He also doesn't want to seem like he's "tattling" to Maria, the supervisor, but the resentment is building.

TASK: Review and discuss and share: what conversations need to happen and the steps to prepare based on what was covered today.
