Is it true that there is a JAE-IP divide in RI?

  • IP boys and girls are also from different campuses, not just our JAE friends

  • School talks/Character & Leadership Education lessons to promote mutual respect between students of different backgrounds

  • Many activities to promote bonding between students (Ori, Class Bonding week, Team Raffles Games, Take 5 etc.)

  • Willingness to take the first step to talk to a peer and make new friends

How manageable is the academic workload in RI, given the increased focus on self directed learning?

  • RI adopts this learning format to promote independent learning and self-discipline.

  • Lecture videos are uploaded online, and students attempt tutorials before lessons.

  • Quizzes are provided online too for students to check their understanding.

  • Lessons are for teachers to go through the tutorials and for students to clarify doubts.

  • Termly schedules for lectures and tutorials are provided for students to plan their time well.

  • GAP day promotes home-based learning.

  • The exact workload varies by subject and by individual, so it may take some time to adjust.

How does the examination system work in RJC?

  • RI assessment structure is a little different. We have an ungraded Timed Practice after the June Holidays to give students an estimate of their understanding of the content learnt, adjusting better for their preparations for promotional examinations.

  • Our graded promotional examinations are at the end of the year, which carry a 70% grade weightage.

  • There are also assessments and assignments throughout the year, so students should be prepared to keep up with their work consistently. These carry a 20% grade weightage. Some of these assignments are take-home, giving students more freedom to plan their time accordingly and complete their work at a suitable pace.

  • There is a 10% grade weightage for class participation and conduct, ensuring students remain focussed and involved during lessons.

  • Students who need extra academic support can attend remedial lessons after receiving their Timed Practice and/or Promotion Examinations grades.

  • Tutors are always open to having academic consultations with students.

Is it true that RI students are so busy chasing achievements that they have no time to focus on other aspects of school life?

  • RI aims to develop our students into the best versions of themselves, challenging them to move out of their comfort zone.

  • Events that promote socialising with peers (e.g. TRG and MMM).

  • RI encourages students to choose our commitments purposefully! CCA and WEP are both optional, so students can choose to commit to what they are interested in and passionate about. This really focuses on the quality of experience in RI, rather than simply the breadth of activities.

Is it true that RI is very stressful?

  • Curriculum is constantly reviewed based on feedback from students each year, ensuring that content is taught at an appropriate pace.

  • Initial stress may surface due to transition from secondary school environment into JC environment, where new learning styles and new people are introduced.

  • Strong sense of community in RI with many initiatives to bond with peers

  • Some students may find studying with peers a good way to be productive and alleviate stress

  • Challenges are bound to surface, and feeling stressed can also be a healthy form of motivation. Support from friends, teachers and family members is important. It is important to learn to seek and reach out to such support systems proactively (e.g. RGC/PHP).

Is it true that JAE students are more disadvantaged in applying for various programmes?

  • Not true! Opportunities and programmes are selected by merit, and it does not matter whether you’re a JAE or RP.

  • For some programmes like CCA, RA and HP, RP students will participate in a first round of selection.

  • There are slots reserved for JAE students, so there are equal opportunities for everyone.
