He was in his 20's and a film major at UCLA when he wrote the movie that would change his career for the better. Child's Play being only his second screen play he had written. Inspired by the marketing of toys to small children he knew he wanted to write a dark satire about how the advertising affected children.

The first script had that the dolls had realistic flesh that could tear and bleed like humans. The first idea was to have Andy accidentally cut his thumb mixing it with Chucky's, Bringing the doll to life and causing him to attack anyone he felt Andy didn't like.

He believes that the bad actions that he commits will bring him and Andy closer but it does the opposite, causing Chucky to spiral in "confusion" on what to do to keep Andy.
