What is the sea parted before them so they could pass on dry land? As the Egyptian chariots pursued the Hebrew people, the Lord told Moses to lift up his staff and stretch his arm over the sea to divide it. God parted the water with a strong wind, allowing the Israelites safe passage.

What is a mountain? Although God spoke to people in other places as well, some familiar stories tell of mortals meeting God or having visions on mountaintops. For example, Moses went up a mountain to receive the commandments of God, and God spoke to Elijah on a mountain as well. In the New Testament, three disciples saw Jesus change as his face “shone like the sun” and his clothes became dazzling white on a high mountain.

What is a serpent (or snake)? The crafty serpent convinced Eve to try the fruit of a tree that was forbidden to them, and both she and Adam ate it, disobeying God.

What are chariots? The type of chariot developed nearly 4,000 years ago were light, fast, two-wheeled vehicles commonly used by military powers in the ancient Near East. Chariots were an important part of armies for over 1,000 years.

Noah sent this bird out from the ark to learn whether the floodwaters had receded.

What is a raven or a dove? First Noah sent a raven, who flew until the waters receded, not returning to Noah. And so he sent a dove, and the dove returned because there was no dry place for it to land. A week later he sent the dove again, and it returned with an olive leaf, so Noah knew that plants were once again growing on the land.

What are locusts? A type of large grasshopper, these insects swarm in large numbers and can quickly decimate crops. They were sometimes seen as a punishment from God, and in Exodus 10:1–20, they appear as one of the plagues visited upon the Egyptians.

What are frogs? In Exodus 8:1–15, we read about the plague of frogs sent upon the Egyptians in an effort to convince them to release the Hebrew people from slavery.

What is the fire did not burn them? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were cast into a fiery furnace because they refused to bow down to a statue of the king in Babylon. But the king was amazed to see the men walking unharmed in the flames, along with a fourth figure who appeared to be an angel. (Daniel 3)

What is a ladder? Jacob dreamt of a ladder set up between Earth and heaven, with angels going up and down. In the same dream, the Lord came to him and promised him many offspring and blessings. (Genesis 28)
