100

What does abiotic mean?

Something that isn’t and never was alive.
100

Mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism are all forms of symbiotic relationship. Using this, what is symbiosis?

A description of long-term relationship in the same space

100

Because I do not have a backbone, but I have an exoskeleton, I am considered an

invertebrate

200

What is BOP trying to do?

Restore one billion oysters to the NY Harbor.

200

This characteristic of living things prevents it from getting harm. Hint I move my hands aways from the fire to avoid getting burn

mutualism

200

Oysters filter the water to eat. This makes oysters…

Filter feeders.

300

Why are oysters so important to the New York Harbor?

They are filter feeders, they have a plethora of positive interactions with other organisms in the harbor, they are a keystone species, they make oyster reefs (anyone of these answers or something along these lines)

300

I do not make my own food which makes me a

parasitism

300

I eat the same food and share the same space with barnacles. This is what kind of interaction?

Competition

400

why does the BOP want to restore oysters to the NY Harbor

Oysters serve an important role in their ecosystem, helping not only the organisms in the New York harbor, but humans as well! (Recall the oyster video we watched)

commensalism
400

Because I do not make my own food nor have a cell wall or chloroplast, I am what kind of living thing?

animal

500

...shows the flow of energy and matter in an ecosystem

food web

500

Who is the primary energy source on our food webs?

The sun!

500
What is the largest abiotic component of an oyster?

Its shell.

500

Oysters get energy by filter-feeding, which clears the water column and makes it easier for sunlight to move through it. This helps eelgrass, which gets energy through photosynthesis. Eelgrass also grows rooted at a muddy shoreline. Their roots stabilize the shore, and prevent oysters from suffocating in muddy sediment. What type of interaction is this?

Mutualism

500

Name five properties of living things.

  • Made of cells
  • Require energy
  • Metabolize (process energy)
  • Respond to their environment
  • Reproduce
  • Evolve (change over time)
  • Grow and develop
  • Maintain homeostasis
