what are the 3Rs
reduce, reuse, recycle
what is global warming?
not natural, extra co2-->greenhouse affect
what is acid rain?
the rain becomes to acidic
what is uv radiation?
absorbed by ozone layer, penetrate, causes skin cancer/aging
what did they do in the industrial revolution
burn fossil fuel
explain the words reduce, reuse and recycle and give examples of each
reduce:use less- smaller plastic cap, use less gas, shut lights when you leave the room
reuse:use same product again- reusable water bottles, donate clothes, regular dishes instead of disposable
recycle: recycle plastic soda bottle-->carpet, recycle aluminum can-->new product
what is the greenhouse affect?
Natural, keeps earth temperature normal
what are some consequences of acid rain?
lake acidification- fish can die because of the low PH of water, damage leaves and forests, destroys monuments and statues made of marble
what causes ozone depletion?
CFCs used in aerosol cans (deodorant, bathroom spray, hairspray) in coolants
what did the thing they did in the industrial revolution cause
extra co2
what does it mean to convert something into reusable materials
Recycling
how can we fix this problem? (global warming)
use less fossil fuel, walk, carpool, mass transit, bus, switch to solar and renewable resources
normal rain is slightly acidic (what number)
5.6
how can we fix this problem (ozone depletion)
ban CFCs and replace with something harmless= global treaty
how can we stop air pollution?
reduce the number of trips you take in your car
what does it mean if an item is biodegradable?
it will eventually break down completely in nature
what is a cause of global warming
Composition burning fossil fuel (coal, oil, natural gas) releases co2, extra co2 traps heat which warms the planet
how can we fix this problem (acid rain)
less burning of fossil fuels and factories
what are some consequences of ozone depletion?
ozone layer became thinner, more uv reaching surface, more skin cancer/ mutation/cataracts
what cause air pollution
Air pollution is caused by solid and liquid particles and certain gases that are in the air these particles and gases can come from car and truck exhaust, factories, dust, pollen, mold spores, volcanoes and wildfires.
what is the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources
Renewable- a resource than can be replenished over a short period EX. water, trees, fish
Non-renewable- resources that cannot be replaced over a human life span, can run out of EX. metals-aluminum
1. loss of habitat for polar bears- cause them to be endangered
2. melting ice caps
3. coastal flooding
4. wildfires 5. more powerful and frequent storms
what is the cause of acid rain
extra acids added to air by pollution from burning fossil fuels
what does the ozone layer trap?
ultraviolet light/ uv
how can you prevent chemical pollution?
Recycle, reuse or donate gas, riding a bike or taking public transportation will help reduce the amount of chemicals put into the air.
