What is an Invertebrate?

An invertebrate is any species that is not considered a vertebrate

100

What is a Vertebrate?

A vertebrate is an animal that has a backbone or spine.

List the 6 Habitats we discussed in class.

Rainforest, Forest, Desert, Tundra, Ocean and Wetland

100

What two words make up the word Biodiversity?

Biology (the study of life) and diversity (meaning variety)

100

Describe some characteristics of a Rainforest

Rainy, Humid, warm temps, rich in biodiversity

200

Which of these is an invertebrate: insects, fish, mammals, or birds?

Insects

200

What is Miss C's favourite animal?

Dolphin

200

What is a Habitat?

A habitat is the natural home or environment for a

plant, animal, or organism.

200

Cutting down forests is called what?

Deforestation

200

What is the largest mammal?

Whale

300

What is Endothermic?

Warm-blooded animals, which can regulate their own body temperature, are called endothermic.

Examples include mammals and birds.

300

Which of these are vertebrates: crustaceans, reptiles, molluscs, or worms?

Reptiles

300

What is a community?

The plants and animals that live together in a habitat form a community.

300

List 3 things that are harmful to biodiversity.

Invasive species, deforestation, human overpopulation.

300

Name one freshwater habitat in Ontario.

Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Thames River

400

What is Ectothermic?

Cold-blooded species, which depend on the heat from the sun to regulate their temperature.

Eg. Reptiles, Fish and Amphibians

400

What group of animals is mostly aquatic, with jointed legs and an exoskeleton?

Crustaceans

400

What is a food web?

Food webs show multiple connections between different organisms, while a food chain only shows one piece of a food web. Arrows on a food web represent the flow of energy.

400

List the three reasons why Biodiversity is important.

Medicine, Soil and water quality, Pollination

400

Name one park in Ontario that protects biodiversity.

Point Pelee, Pinery Provincial Park

500

What is an invertebrate with 8 legs, no antennae, no claws, and no wings?

Arachnid

500

Vertebrates are divided into five main groups. Name all five groups and give one unique characteristic of each.

  • Fish → live in water, have gills

  • Amphibians → live on land & water, undergo metamorphosis

  • Reptiles → cold-blooded, scaly skin, lay eggs on land

  • Birds → feathers, wings, lay eggs with hard shells

  • Mammals → have hair/fur, produce milk for young

500

Producers vs Decomposers

Producers are living things that make their own food from the sun, water, and soil.

Consumers are living things that do not make their own food.

500

What are decomposers? Name an example.

are living things that get their energy by breaking down dead plants and animals.

What is Genetic Diversity?

Genetic diversity is the biological variation that occurs within species. Genetic diversity is important because it allows organisms to adapt to changing environments. More variation increases the likelihood that the species will possess a trait that can survive in a new environment.
