In 1969, Prosenjit Poddar, a student at UC Berkeley, confided to psychologist Lawrence Moore that he intended to kill a young woman after she rejected his romantic advances. Poddar was briefly detained but then released by campus police since he appeared rational. Moore’s supervisor informed Moore not to take further action, and the woman was not informed of his threats. Weeks later, the woman was murdered by Poddar, and her parents sued the university. This case eventually ruled that mental health professionals are obligated to protect potential victims, even if it breaks patient confidentiality.
