What is Biotic and Abiotic?
Biotic - something living
Abiotic - non-living
What is Matter Cycling?
The process of matter moving from one form to another.
What is Photosynthesis?
Plants use sunlight for food from carbon dioxide and water. Radiation energy → Chemical energy (can be used and stored)
Food Chain - show how living things get food and how nutrient are passed from species to species.
Food Web - show multiple connections between different organisms.
Ecological Footprint
A measure of how much people take from nature compared to the number of natural resources available
What are Biomes? Provide and example in Canada
A community characterised by wildlife, soil, vegetation and climate
Examples: Boreal Forest, Tundra, Temp Deciduous Forest, Grassland, Mountain Forest
What are different types of matter cycling?
Water, carbon, nitorgen
What is Cellular Respiration?
The process in which organisms use oxygen to break down food to get chemical energy for cell function. (does not require light energy)
Explain Consumers, Producers and Decomposers
Producers - living things that make their own food from the sun, water, and soil
Consumers - are living things that don't make their own food.
Decomposers - are living things that get their energy by breaking down dead plants and animals.
Balanced ecosystem
When species and organisms remain the same, no major changes caused by natural causes or human interaction
Compare Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere
Lithosphere - rocky outer layer, rockers on terrain, mountains and beneath oceans.
Define Biosphere - The biosphere consists of life on earth
Define Hydrosphere - consists of all earth water
Define Atmosphere - consists of layers of gasses that cover earth
True or False: Most of Earth's carbon is stored as fossil fuels
TRUE
True or False: Cellular Respiration cannot occur at night
FALSE
True or False: All animals are consumers because they get energy from eating food.
TRUE
True or False: Human interaction is not the largest factor of climate change
FALSE
How do human interaction effect biotic and abiotic things
Deforestation, urbanization, agricultural practices
What is the layer of the atmosphere that absorbs some UV radiation? HINT - holes in the layer caused by glabal warming
Ozone layer
Water + ___________
--->
Sugar + ________
Carbon Dioxide & Oxygen
Draw a Food Chain
Include: owl, grass, snake, mouse, mushroom
Explain how you can lower your ecological footprint score
Buy sustainable food, less packaging, local
Shower time, toilet flush, leave the tap running when brushing teeth
Limit appliances, LED lights
How are these interactions important for ecosystems?
Rain in the hydrosphere falls from the earth’s atmosphere to the lithosphere. Once in the lithosphere, this water can form streams and rivers to provide drinking water and habitats for animals, humans and plant growth. Water leads to erosion of soils and coastal regions (lithosphere). It can also uproot plants and leads to flood in the biosphere.
Explain Water Cycling
The water cycle is an example of matter cycling. Water travels in a cycle through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, as well as through the currents of bodies of water.
Explain how Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are connected
Animals can not photosynthesize their food, they get energy from plants they eat which means without photosynthesis from plants, animals would have no way to convert chemical energy.
What would happen if mice became extinct?
Without mice eating insects, there would be a lot more insects. Without mice eating seeds and fruits, there would be less pollination. For predators like hawks, owls, small carnivores and snakes, the loss of such a food source could drive them out of a habitat area.
What is a protected area and why is it beneficial?
Helps ensure that ecosystem will remain intact. helps preserve water quality and earth's food supply. Limit impact of climate change
