A student is studying how far room temperature water would squirt out of a plastic milk carton when 4mm holes are punched at different heights from the bottom of the container. What is the independent, dependent, and constant?

I: Heights of container

D: Distance of water

C: Liquid + milk carton

In a light-colored forest, what happens to the number of dark-colored moths due to natural selection?

They decrease

100

Which group of biomolecules includes fats and oils?

Lipids

What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

Rough: Ribosomes on the outside

Smooth: No Ribosomes on the outside

A student is studying how long it takes a cat to react to different sounds played at the same volume each time. What is the independent, dependent, and constant?

I: Sounds

D: Cat reaction

C: Volume

What are the four principals of natural selection?

Over reproduction of offspring

Reproductive advantage

Heritability

Variation

What are the monomers for each macromolecule?

Protein: Amino Acid

Nucleic Acids: Nucleotides

Carbohydrates: Monosaccharide

Lipid: Fatty acid and glycerol

A student is trying to find out which type of fertilizer is the best for getting a plant to grow as tall as possible. She is planning to keep all of the plants she is testing indoors, on the window sill of her classroom. What is the independent, dependent, constant, and control?

I: Fertilizer

D: Plant growth

Constant: Location

Control: No fertilizer

300

What is the term for an organism’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions?

Homeostasis

300

What is the difference between inherited and acquired traits?

Inherited: You receive this trait from your parents

Acquired: This is something you learn from the environment around you

300

What is the function for each macromolecule

Nucleic Acids-Store and transmit genetic info

Carbohydrates-short term energy storage

Lipids-Long term energy storage

Proteins-Little bit of everything but enzymes, muscle contractions, etc

Which organelle is responsible for photosynthesis in plant cells?

Chloroplast

A student wanted to find out if different mixtures would result in an ice cube floating at a different height than only using water. He created solutions of salt water, sugar water, and water with potassium added to it. He used an ice cube tray to create ice cubes that were all the same volume and mass. What is the independent, dependent, constant, and control group?

I: Mixtures

D: Floating height

Constant: Ice cube volume and mass

Control: Water only

400

What are all living things made of? (smallest unit to be considered living)

One or more cells

400

What is the difference between natural selection and evolution?

Natural selection is the process (mechanism) of populations changing, evolution is the end result which is a changed population

400

What is a product and reactant?

Product: Substances you end with

Reactant: Substances you start with

400

What is the jellylike interior of the cell called?

Cytoplasm

500

What is the definition for independent variable, dependent variable, constant variable, and control group?

I: The variable that we control the change of

D: Depends on the change of the independent

Constant: What we keep the same throughout the experiment

Control: The group that does not receive the independent variable/change

500

Which characteristic of life allows tadpoles to turn into frogs?

Development

500

Give the general steps for how a population changes over time.

An environmental pressure is introduced, then their is variation in the population one is advantageous. Those with the advantageous trait outcompete for resources allowing them to have more babies. Those babies outcompete and also have more babies. This continues until it becomes the group norm which is no longer advantageous thus being an adaptation.

500

What is the difference between exothermic reactions and endothermic reactions?

Exothermic: release energy as the reaction happens

Endothermic: Absorbs energy as the reaction happens

500

What is the difference between ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and golgi apparatus?

Ribosome: Makes proteins

Rough ER: Transports proteins to the golgi apparatus

Golgi Apparatus: Sorts, modified, and ships proteins
