Bacteria reproduce using…
binary fission
People are making antibiotics resistance worse by:
not finishing the full course of prescribed antibiotics
A decomposer eats …
Dead plants or animals and returns nutrients into the soil
What carbon-related process do producers do?
photosynthesis
How many variables do WE change in an experiment?
1, just the independent variable
What is the difference between asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction only requires 1 parent organism , sexual reproduction requires more than 1 organism
The process by which organisms that are best adapted to their environment are most likely to survive and reproduce
Natural Selection
What do the arrows in a food web/food chain represent?
The transfer of energy
What is one way that humans are impacting climate change?
Deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, etc.
What is the difference between an independent and dependent variable?
The independent variable is the variable that we change/manipulate/adjust and the dependent variable is the variable that we measure/DEPENDS on the independent variable/changes because of the independent variable
How would bacteria populations grow if there were no antibiotics in the environment?
The bacteria would grow exponentially
What was the difference between Lamarck’s and Darwin’s Theories of Evolution?
Lamarck said organisms evolved because they wanted a trait that suited their environment, Darwin said that organisms who already had traits suited for their environment were able to survive and reproduce and that is how evolution happened
One organism in a food chain has its population decrease, how would that affect the rest of the food chain?
Its prey’s population would increase and its predator’s population would decrease
What causes eutrophication?
Human activity / excess nutrients in the soil / something about fertilizer runoff entering water
What is a control in an experiment?
A group that acts as our baseline/standard in our experiment
E. coli go through reproduction every 10 minutes. How many bacteria would there be in a half hour (30 min) if there were 5 bacteria to start?
40 bacteria
What would a good title for this graph be? (picture does not show because it costs money to include pictures, will need to pull up on a separate slide to show)
Number of books sold in 8 weeks at a ________
How much energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next?
10%
How does eutrophication cause the death of aquatic organisms?
The lack of oxygen in the water
Why do we keep some aspects of an experiment the same and what are they called?
So that we know the variable we change (independent variable) is the actual cause of the change/effect of the dependent variable
What does it mean for bacteria to be antibiotic resistant (use scientific vocabulary)?
It means that they have specific adaptations that allow them to survive in an environment in which antibiotics exist
A population of squirrels have smaller teeth to nibble easier on tree soft nuts, but there are a small number of squirrels who have bigger teeth in the population because they do not attract mates. There is fertilizer added to the environment that causes the tree nut shells to become thicker and harder to break open, how would you expect the squirrel population to change?
It should change to favor the squirrels with bigger teeth, so their numbers will increase while the squirrels with smaller teeth will decrease because many cannot open the nuts to eat
Write the equation you should use that would be most useful as a first step to determine which animal uses energy more efficiently?
(egested waste + heat loss)/food ingested x 100
Which type of organisms perform cellular respiration, producer or consumers?
Both
What makes a question a good scientific question?
Testable
Can be answered by conducting a scientific experiment
Can be investigated with available resources
