What is Non-Specific Defense (Innate Immunity)?
Innate Immunity- is nonspecific and includes natural barriers, inflammatory response, complement system, and natural killer cells
What are antigens?
Proteins produced by foreign invader
What are leukocytes?
white blood cells
What does red bone marrow do?
makes all types of blood cells
What does the appendix do?
filters pathogens in the digestive track

What do B-cells do?
bind to specific antigens and begin cloning themselves
What are the two main groups of leukocytes?
Granulocytes and Agranulocytes
What does the Thymus Gland do?
matures T lymphocytes
What is the definition of Immunity?
A condition of being able to resist a particular disease
What is an inflammatory response?
Inflammatory Response- damage to tissue signals the response which appears swollen, warm, red, and painful
What do T cells need help identifying?
need help identifying foreign cells
How many white blood cell types are in the granulocytes group and what are they?
3, Eosinophils, Basophils, and Neutrophils
What do lymph nodes do?
filter lymph and removes pathogens and antigens
Where are Phagocytes produced?
in bone marrow
What does the complement system do?
Helps the immune response by increasing cell response

Proteins produced by B cells that bind to specific antigens

2, Lymphocytes and monocytes

filters blood and stores worn out blood cells
What do neutrophils do?
responds to injured areas and clean up bacteria
What are natural killer cells?
any cells that are not recognized, they do not increase in response and do not "remember" invaders
What do Helper T and cytotoxic T cells do?
Continue to aid in immune response
