Viral vectors are best associated with which biotechnology?

Gene Therapy

In gel electrophoresis, DNA fragment are separated according to their:

Size

A DNA molecule that contains foreign DNA from another species is called

Recombinant DNA

100

What does CRISPR stand for?

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindrome Repeats

200

What are the two types of gene therapy?

In Vivo & Ex Vivo

200

A series of known DNA sizes in base pairs that are used to compare results of gel electrophoresis:

DNA Markers

200

which two enzymes are used to cut and seal the DNA bonds?

Restriction enzymes and DNA ligase

200

Why is gel electrophoresis used?

Forensics & Zoology

300

Is gene therapy a cure or a treatment?

It is more of a treatment rather than a cure.

300

Gel Electrophoresis can be used for

Identifying unknown species

300

Plasmids are ideal for expressing a gene of interest because:

Bacteria/plasmids can replicate quickly.

300

What is CRISPR

Natural defense mechanism found in bacterial cells against viruses.

400

Gene Therapy is used to

deliver normal copies of genes to cells so that a cell may produce a functioning protein.

400

What is DNA fingerprinting and why is it useful?

DNA fingerprinting is the use of gel electrophoresis in a forensics lab. DNA that was collected from a crime scene is compared to that of a suspect. It can help identify or eliminate suspects.

400

A transgenic organism is best described as

An organism that contains DNA from another species.

Explain why plasmids are ideal for expressing a gene of interest

Plasmids are circular DNA found outside the nucleoid of bacteria. They can be manipulated to carry genes of interest, which they express in the form of a protein. As bacteria replicate, they produce more plasmids and thus more protein. This is a fast and effective way to harvest proteins.

500

Why are viruses used in gene therapy?

Viral vectors would invade the target tissue, and manipulate the DNA to include a healthy copy of the gene. This would allow the cell to produce healthy copies of the protein, rather than the mutated version. In doing so, this would alleviate  symptoms.

Suppose that you have just adopted a puppy, and are curious to know which breed it is. Explain which biotechnology you might be able to use to determine the breed and why.

Gel Electrophoresis

500

Plasmid Based Transformation is used to

create recombinant plasmids that will express a gene of interest as a protein

Name an example of a GMO crop, and the benefits of using it.

One example is Bt corn, which is modified to include a gene from bacteria to produce a protein that is toxic to certain pests. This limits the amount of pesticides used on crops.
