Name two mammals that use echolocation. Explain echolocation.

Bats & Dolphins; Echolocation works by using sound waves at a high frequency that we can't hear. When an animal like a bat or dolphin makes a sound, the sound travels through the air or water and hits objects. The sound bounces back, and by listening to how fast or slow the sound returns, the animal can figure out where the object is and what it is, based on the frequency of the returning sound waves. Higher frequency sounds bounce off smaller objects, helping them detect things like insects or fish!

Why can some ticks cause serious human health problems?

Dolphins and whales, which are warm-blooded, have _______ to help them keep their bodies insolated in the cold water.   Why would cold-blooded animals have difficulty surviving in polar regions?

Blubber;

Cold-blooded animals depend on the environment for warmth. Polar regions are cold environments.

Cold-blooded animals could not keep enough body warmth to survive in continuously cold conditions.

Name the five classes of vertebrates. Give 1 unique characteristic of each.

  • Birds - Feathers (All birds have feathers, which are unique to them and help with flight and insulation.)
  • Amphibians - Smooth skin (Amphibians, like frogs, have smooth, moist skin that helps them absorb oxygen and water.)
  • Mammals - Hair (All mammals have hair or fur at some stage of their life, which helps with warmth and protection.)
  • Reptiles - Scaly skin (Reptiles, like snakes and lizards, have dry, scaly skin that helps prevent water loss and provides protection.)
  • Fish - Gills (Fish have gills that allow them to extract oxygen from water, unlike land animals that breathe air with lungs.)
