As there were a few reasons for migration; Bridget Mason, The Great Migration, and waves of emigration from the south were some of the main factors for bringing larger groups of African American to California. Migration had given African Americans a sense of hope for leaving their roots for a fresh start. They were able to build communities and begin to thrive in business and culturally. This began to create the foundation for Soul Food, allowing people, restaurants, and grocery stores to replicate Southern Black food in a new place.

Black communities began moving west during the Second Great Migration in the 1940s to places like California and Los Angeles. People began to open restaurants from the food they had back home.

Kelly Carlisle created the Acta Non Verba Youth Urban Farm Project. She was able to create a community Garden that allowed the kids of Oakland to learn and experience what it's like to be able to grow and obtain fresh foods. This farm was a good opportunity for kids of East Oakland to gain educational farming experience. It also gave families hope knowing there is a way for them to access fresh foods each week.
