We're all writers here! So we know the importance of physical descriptions! Is using terms like mocha, chocolate, caramel and tan/tanned alright when describing characters with darker complexions?

No! When describing Black or Brown characters you should never use food items to refer to skin color nor should you call a character tan or tanned since the term "tan" is too broad and doesn't give a sense of shade (I've heard someone call a person with blech white skin tanned once)

Instead, you should use colors like russet, tawny, ochre, or umber. Different types of wood, gemstones, or metals could also be used.
