How can you help set up and execute YouthRoots events?
As a working board, the Board of Directors members are encouraged to volunteer and participate for YouthRoots events. Your help in these events can make the process a lot smoother and more efficient (especially with only 2 staff members).

What is the "Minutes" tab in my binder for?
Since we are a nonprofit, YouthRoots must keep track of what goes on in all the Board of Directors meetings. Therefore, we created the "Minutes" section for notes of what happened in the "Minutes" of our meetings.

Since we expanded to 3 YouthBoards, there are 45 YouthBoard members.

If you can't make it to a meeting, what do you do?
There are two possible options: 1. Contact Lauren or Lacey and inform them you will not be able to attend the meeting. 2. Call into the meeting via the conference call (information located in the Logistics tab of your binder).

How do you know where the money for YouthRoots is going?
The YouthBoard. The money they raise is distributed (by their choosing) to local nonprofits. The Board of Directors get involved in special circumstances (see the Grant Making Policy for more information).

Does the Executive Director lead the organization?
Since Lacey is the Executive Director, she is seen as the leader. However, the Board of Directors is responsible for the legal aspects of the nonprofit.

What youth-oriented programs does YouthRoots offer?
For their first year, our youth can participate in our YouthBoard. After their first year, they can join our Executive Committee or our Social Enterprise Committee.

Can you create committees to allow YouthRoots to become more efficient?
Yes! In fact, the board has just created the YouthRoots Marketing Committee! (Talk to Jennifer to see how it's going.)

True or False: Restricted gifts are better than unrestricted gifts.
False. Unrestricted gifts are preferred, unless the chances of getting a gift is better when it is restricted. Restricted gifts can go into one of three accounts: the general operating account, the endowment, or the YouthBoard grant-making account.

What is the Board of Directors responsible for knowing?
The board must know financial information and have copies of files used by the Executive Director and financial manager. There is a more specific list on page 7 of the handout in the "Board Roles" tab of your binder.

What is the definition of philanthropy?
Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. Meaning: donating money to make the world a better place.

Our Donor Bill of Rights states that donors have the right to be informed of YouthRoots's most recent financial statements, as well as the right to know if their gifts were given in the way they were intended.

Yes. The Board of Directors has the authority to put it to a vote and amend policies based on the majority vote.

How often does the Board of Directors meet?
The Board of Directors is required to meet monthly. Members must be notified of a meeting at least 24 hours beforehand.
