tissues

100

Which process uses smooth and skeletal muscles in the tongue and pharynx to push food through the pharynx into the esophagus?

swallowing

100

Why is the liver important?

It makes juice called bile which helps it break down fat so it is digested easier
100

When looking at a nutrition label, what should you look at?

serving size, calories, fat, sodium, vitamins and minerals, sugars

100

What are voluntary muscles?

muscles you control, works in pairs, attached to bones and called skeletal muscles

200
What are the four major types of tissues?

muscle, connective, epithelial, nervous

200

What is the muscular wave that travels the length of the digestive system moving partially digested food a short distance down the tract?

peristalsis

200

What does the small intestine do?

Long coiled tube that helps digest food and absorb nutrients

200

List the major food groups.

grains, vegetables, fruits, protein, dairy, junk food

FOCUS ON BALANCED DIET

200

What are involuntary muscles?

do not control, form in the walls of digestive tract, in blood vessels and organs

300

What are several tissues that work together to do a certain job?

organ

300

What occurs in small intestine as short segments contract. It helps increase the absorption of nutrients.

segmentation

300

What does the large intestine do?

soaks up water and minerals, leaves behind waste

300

What is the function of food in the body?

Food gives the body energy and nutrients to carry out life functions

300

How are muscles attached to a bone?

with stretchy tissues called tendons

400

How are cells organized in the body?

cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, the body

400

How does the mouth start the process of digestion?

teeth cut and grind food into smaller pieces, saliva moistens the foot to make swallowing easier, tongue has taste buds

400
What are the skeletal muscles and what do they do in the body?

voluntary, produce head and energy for the body, protects internal organs, moves skeleton

400

How should you keep your  muscles in shape?

Exercise, lift weights, walk, run, stretch, eat healthy

400

How do muscles contract to make you move?

muscle contracts, it pulls on tendon, tendon pulls on bone and then you move

500

What is a group of organs that carry out jobs?

organ system

Describe the journey that food takes through the digestion tract?

Take a bite of food using the mouth, teeth cut and grind the food, saliva moistens it. Swallow using smooth and skeletal muscles down the pharynx and esophagus to get to the stomach. In the stomach, food is broken down in a liquid by mixing it with acid and digestive enzymes, sends the liquid to the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. Anything not absorbed, is sent to the large intestine. In the large intestine, water and minerals leave and waste is left behind, which is when you go to the bathroom

500

What are cardiac muscles and what do they do in the body?

involuntary, moves many internal organs

500
