SKELETAL SYSTEM - the reason we all Aren't Mush
Making a JOINT effort to learn
Let's JOIN in the fun
Science! EXPERIMENTS
100
Of the four basic shapes of bones, this one is found in your arms and legs.
Flat Bones
100
Minecraft characters do not have this kind of joint in their hips. What joint are they missing?
Ball and Socket
100
Demonstrate the movement of a hinge joint using yourself!
Bending back and forth of elbow or knee

What is Calcium and what does it do our bodies?
Calcium is a mineral that protects our bones and helps them stay strong.
200
Bones include 30% living tissue. The centre of a bone contains soft tissue called this.
Marrow
200
Pusheen the cat uses her cat elbows when she moves around. What kind of joint can be found in your elbow, or used to let a door open up.
A Hinge Joint
200
Demonstrate how a pitcher (in baseball) throws a ball (be careful and do not actually throw anything). Have a team mate explain where the ball and socket joint is and what kind of movement this joint allows.
The ball and socket joint allows movement in any direct and can be found in the shoulder. This mobility allows for the pitching movement.

Your friend explains that he wants to sit in a bath tub of vinegar for 1 week. Your friend is a skeleton. Would you recommend that he does this? Why?
I would not recommend that he does this because the vinegar will remove the calcium from his bones and will make them weak and squishy.
300
This connects the bones of the skeleton together. This rubbery tissue is flexible and tough.
Cartilage
300
Gliding Joints allow sliding movement back and forth. What Joint is designed to allow for no movement?
Fixed Joint
300
Hold your arm in the air (be careful!) and wave at your classmate across the room without moving your arm. What Joint are you using, and where is it?
You should be using the GLIDING join in your WRIST to wave to your classmate
300
I want to buy foods high in Calcium! What are 3 foods that I should buy? Work together and have a different member of your group provide each food!
Cheese, Milk, Yogurt, Spinach, Milk products, Go-Gurt, Tofu and Soybeans,
400
The tough outer membrane that covers bones. It is also an important mineral that should be included in our daily diets.
Calcium
400
Your neck holds up your head it also has movement from side to side. The joint in your neck must be this.
A Pivot joint
400
Your spine can bend, twist and move around. Being careful, touch your toes and explain what joint is in your Vertebrae!
it is a PARTIALLY MOVEABLE joint.
400
My uncle Francis stopped getting Calcium in his diet for a long time. What are some potential impacts of not getting enough Calcium?
Brittle Bones, Easy Bone fractures, Forgot what Milk tastes like
500
Strong bands of tissue hold the bones together while cartilage stops them from rubbing together. These bands of tissue are called what?
Ligaments
500
You are walking to the park with your friend when someone yells out "LOOK OUT! There is an angry duck flying right at a FIXED joint on your body!". What part of you would you protect from the duck?
Your Skull (or your head).
500
You would be really still without moveable joints. Being Careful, with your team, 1 at a time, demonstrate all 4 moveable joints and state 1 place you can find them.
#1 Ball and Socket - Shoulder, hip #2 Hinge - Elbow, Knee #3 Pivot - Neck #4 Gliding - Wrist
500
Before you are born your bones have not hardened and are made MOSTLY of Cartilage. The process of the bones getting harder is called what?
