SCREAMING CRYING PERFECT STORMS. Ugh!! This book was SO hard to read but so good. Following Frankie in her experience first as a nurse in the Vietnam War and then as a returning veteran afterward was so compelling. I really felt her excitement, anger, sadness, grief, etc. Every emotion was heightened and her story was so intense. It makes me have a new empathy for veterans, especially in a war like Vietnam.

This is a historical fiction novel, but it feels almost distopian. I wish it were an imagined world, but the hardships the characters face in this story were the reality for Romanian citizens during the peak of Nicolae Ceaușescu's dictatorship. Ruta Sepetys does a wonderful job of humanizing this forgotten piece of history. A captivating story of resilience, courage, hope, and morality. Trust and betrayal. How far would you go to save the people you love?
