Describe how Mohammed’s religion began.

Mohammed was convinced that many gods worshipped by the Arabs were false and that there was only one God. His wife and friends were his first converts, though many opposed his condemnation of idols. Describe the Emperor’s conflict over image-worship.

Churches of the Eastern Empire were full of statues and images of Christ and of the saints. The emperor opposed using these images in worship, if there weren't any idols the Muslims and Jews would assimilate into the empire more easily. An edict was issued forbidding worship of images, this was opposed by the clergy, monks, and illiterate peasantry.

The Apostles were the first leaders. Their successors became overseers called Bishops who had oversight of Christian communities in different areas. Under the Bishops were the Priests who carried out the spiritual work. Lastly, Deacons helped Priests with practical affairs of the church.

Describe how Charlemagne set up administrative positions in his kingdom.

Charlemagne chose men he could trust with good character and ability whether noble, freeman, or serf. Land was divided into counties with each under the responsibility of a count. Districts on the frontiers were called marches controlled by margraves. Charlemagne instituted the Missi Dominici to collect revenue and keep him in touch with everything in the empire.
