The number of degrees on a compass
What is 360 degrees
100
What is your first step in conducting an Ice Rescue (where a victium has fallen through the ice on a pond or lake)?
What is survey the situation. This is always the first step in any first aid or rescue case. For example, your rescue steps would be different if the victim is unconscious or too injured to assist themselves.
100
Some of the first aid conditions that are more common in the winter...
What is Frost bite, Hypothermia, Injuries from falling due to ice,...
100
Describe some items to consider when planning where to build a shelter.
What is avoid damp ground, avoid ridges or places where you will be exposed to wind, at the bottom of a valley, ravines and washes where water may run when it rains.
100
The sheet bend is used for....
What is tying two ropes together. Works well for the end of a tarp or when two ropes are of differing sizes.
200
You will be traveling in this direction if your compass is set at 180 Degrees
What is South
200
If you have a rope available and the person is able to assist with their rescue, you will....
What is tie a bowline that is large enough for them to get around themselves and throw it to them while standing on the shore.
200
What is frostbite and identifying frostbite
What is: Frostbite is when the skin and tissue become cold enough to freeze. Typical complaints from victims are that the area is numb, or that the skin looks grayish-white.
200
Describe at least two types of shelters you might build (there are at least 5 as described in Boy's Life magazine).
What is: using a tarp if available, the cocoon, a fallen tree, a lean-to, the A-frame, a snow cave (winter only).
200
This knot starts and ends many lashings...
What is the clove hitch.
300
The Lines on a Map that show elevation
What is Contour Lines
300
Once a victim has been recovered from the water, you will most likely need to treat the victim for this condition...
What is shock or hypothermia.
300
To treat frostbite....
What is: Treat by moving the victim into a shelter, if severe get the person into warm dry clothing and get to a doctor. For minor frostbite, warm the areas in warm (not hot) water until normal color and feeling returns.
300
You are going on a hike in unfamiliar trails, describe some items you may want to include in your pack in case you need to build a shelter
What is a tarp that is large enough to enclose several people (each patrol leader should account for their patrol), rope to suspend the tarp. If you are hiking in areas that are not wooded, you may also want to be sure to use a hiking stick so that it may be used to hold up the shelter.
300
Two methods to prevent the ends of a rope from fraying...
What is whipping and fusing.
400
Mark a spot on the ground, then using your compass, mark your bearing as 15 degrees and walk 50 steps. Now change your bearing to 135 degrees and take 50 steps. Next change your bearing to 225 degrees and take 50 steps. Where will you end up and why?
What is the same place you started. Why, the sum of the changes in degrees is 360
400
If you have to go onto the ice to save your victim, describe your method...
What is first using the rope, make a bowline around the rescuer and then having those on shore hold the line while the rescuer crawls out to the victim. If two ropes are available use the second one for the victim. If a ladder is available slide the ladder out over the hole for the victim to grab.

If using a tarp for your shelter, describe at least two considerations for your design.

400
Knot used for staking out the guy line of you tent or dining fly...
What is the Taut-line hitch.
500
The direction your traditional compass needle points (be specific)?
What is Magnetic North
