You can refuse to cash a Federal Government Cheque if there is evidence that the cheque may be counterfeit, altered/fraudulent, or there are reasonable ground to believe that there has been illegal or fraudulent activity in relation to the cheque.
In these situations, you must refuse to accept the cheque and provide a Letter of Refusal.

What are the eligibility conditions for submission of a cheque to Cheque Verification Service (CVS)? When is the cheque automatically sent to CVS?
CVS will accept the following cheques/negotiable items for submissions:
-Cheques
-Other Financial Institution (OFI) drafts
-OFI certified cheques
Prior to submitting a cheque/item to CVS, the following eligibility conditions must be met:
-The cheque is a minimum of $10,000 (CAD or USD)
-The cheque must be payable to the registered name on the deposit account (CIF)
-The cheque must be issued from a business account
-The cheque issuer must originate in Canada or USA
-The appropriate hold must be lodged
The CVS request button will be automatically selected when an appropriate hold is placed for items with a value of $50,000 or more
Under what circumstances would you submit a Unusual Transaction Report (UTR) and can you give an example?
Unusual activity is financial transactions or pattern of activity. It is not consistent with what would be expected for a given customer. It may be potentially indicative of money laundering or terrorist financing activity.
To determine whether a transaction or activity is unusual, Business Lines should consider the following:
-whether the transaction makes business sense
-does the transaction fit the customer's historical pattern of activity
-or does the transaction make sense for the product type
What steps would you take in the event of an Emergency and/or during and after a Robbery situation? Who must the Branch Manager or branch delegate contact after a robbery?
-Comply with the robber's demand and show your willingness to cooperate
-Explain to the robber that you must leave your work area and will need a colleague to assist you in obtaining the funds. Approach your immediate colleague and lightly squeeze their elbow while stating: "I need help with an under-ride"
-Hit F12 one time, combine the dispensed cash with the Decoy, place the money in a clear plastic bag, return to workstation while accompanied by your colleague and hand over the money to the robber.
-End the transaction, both colleagues should remove themselves from the situation by stepping back and walking away.
Branch Manager or branch delegate must contact 911 as soon as it is safe to do so and followed with calling GSI Incident Reporting Centre to report that a robbery has occurred.
