What signs or scenarios would indicate there may be possible Elder Financial Abuse?

  • Branch sees different individuals bringing in a POA, for an elder member, naming them as agent for the elder member. Example, son brings in POA first with himself as agent, and then daughter brings in POA a week or two later with her listed as agent.
  • Elder member is being coerced by unrelated third party to do certain types of transactions on their account. Example, elder member comes in to withdraw a certain amount of money to send off to the third party.
  • Individual is cashing checks drawn on an elder member’s account for amounts that would seem to be unusual for this type of member. Individual may be coming in to the branch several times within a month or going to different branches to avoid detection.
  • Transfers conducted from an elder member’s account to another individual who does not appear to have any relation to the elder member.
