You should expect breastfeeding to hurt.
What is false? Breastfeeding, when the baby is attached correctly, should not hurt.
These immune components in breastmilk help babies fight off infection.
A. What are antibodies? Antibodies are little warriors in mom’s body that fight off germs. Babies don’t have any of their own, so it is important that mom pass these antibodies to the baby through breastfeeding so the baby gets sick less often.
You need these three things to breastfeed.
What are a breast, a baby, and a brain.
A baby's stomach is the size of this object when they are born.
What is a shooter marble holding only 5 to 7 ml (1 to 1 1/2 tsp). By day 3 the baby's stomach has grown to the size of a pingpong ball, and by day 10 the stomach holds the same amount as a plastic egg. Feeding a newborn more than 2oz of milk is too much and stretches out their stomach. The amount of milk mom makes at these times are just enough for the baby.
Nobody knows for sure that breastmilk is best for babies.
What is false? Breastmilk contains thousand of compounds that science are still identifying. Your milk has antibodies anti-viruses and anti- allergen that help protect baby from illness. Your milk also has hormones that help your baby grow and helps with safer sleep to protect from SIDS. Plus, its free, fresh and safe to drink anytime and any where. Some things just can't be made in a factory.
This early milk is made during pregnancy and the first 3-5 days after birth and is very thick and concentrated (think sweet + condensed milk).
What is colostrum? Mothers make very small amounts of thick, nourishing colostrum that is gentle on baby’s brand-new tummy. Mom makes just the right amount for her baby.
This is the best way to make more milk.
What is nurse more often? Frequent feedings at the breast encourage mom's body to make more milk for her growing baby.
Newborns should eat this many times per day.
What is 10-12? Frequent feedings are necessary for babies to grow adequately, to slowly stretch their stomachs, and to increase mom's milk supply.
Breastfed babies are healthier.
What is true? Breastfeeding helps babies develop correctly.

True or false: breastmilk changes to meet the needs of growing babies and toddlers.
What is true? Breastmilk changes over the course of a feeding, over the course of the day, and over the course of the baby’s duration of breastfeeding to meet their needs. Burger King stole our slogan, but as a breastfed baby you can truly “have it your way!”
When babies are nursing well, getting milk, and not hurting mom they probably have a good ______.
What is "latch"? "Latch" is what we call how baby's mouth fits on mom's breast. Babies latch on with wide mouths and take in a lot of mom's nipple and areola. A "good" latch is when baby is effectively drinking milk (listen for swallowing, jaw movement, chin buried in breast, lips turned out or not visible) and mom is comfortable (baby's latch is taking in much of her breast and not rubbing or pinching).
A baby should gain this many ounces per week in the first 2 months of life.
What is 4-6 ounces per week?
Mothers with breasts too large, too small, or with flat or inverted nipples will not be able to breastfeed.
What is false? Mothers of all shapes, sizes, and varieties can breastfeed. About 97% of mothers can physically provide all of their babies' nutrition, but unfortunately other factors get in our way.
WIC offers these sessions for mothers to learn about breastfeeding.
What is a breastfeeding class? WIC offers free group classes once a month on the first Thursday from 3-4 p.m. or individual sessions one on one with breastfeeding peer counselors at your convenience.
Breastmilk has this many components: dozens, hundreds, or thousands.
What is thousands? Breastmilk has thousands of components in it, some of which science cannot even identify, more or less replicate and put in a can. Artificial Baby Milks have recently started adding DHA and ARA to try to be “more like breastmilk” but the only thing REALLY like breastmilk is the REAL thing.
Giving bottles and pacifiers early in a baby's life may (HELP) or (HARM) the breastfeeding relationship. (Pick one)
What is harm? Because these nipples are shaped differently and work differently, the baby learns to suck differently on them. The amount of time a baby spends sucking on an artificial nipple also cuts down on the amount of time the baby is at the breast, and may reduce mom's milk supply.
Around 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months old a baby goes through __________, which is a period of rapid growth when a baby may wake more often and need to be fed more often to help mom's body adjust to his new food needs.
What is a growth spurt? Growth spurts sometimes cause moms to think they are losing their milk supply-- it's exactly the opposite! Frequent nursing during growth spurts helps moms increase their milk supply to meet their growing babies needs.
Mothers and babies can breastfeed comfortably in public.
What is true? The more you breastfeed, the more milk you will make so you should breastfeed your baby whenever and wherever they are hungry.

The correct amount of time for a baby to eat is: for 10 minutes on either breast; for 30 minutes split between both breasts; for 30 minutes on only one breast; or any of the above.
What is any of the above? A newborn should nurse for at least ten minutes per feeding, but that may be from both breasts, from one breast only, and the baby may feed longer from one or either breast.
When babys smack lips or making sucking sounds, bringing one or both hands to mouth, moving head side to side and opening mouth, making a fist, sticking tongue out or grunting or crying all can be signs of what?
What are feeding cues or hunger cues? Be sure to watch your baby for these clues, not the clock. Breastfeed whenever your baby wants to. Trying to feed an infant in a quite deep sleep just because its been 2 hours is likely hard to wake up and be frustrating. Watch your baby's sleep states and feeding cues to help you know when baby is hungry.
