On March 25, 1998, Mahant Swami Maharaj had to go through coronary bypass surgery. Once, during his recovery after his operation, the air-conditioning in Swamishri’s room was on to the maximum setting. Hence, he contracted a cold and felt intolerable pain. He tried to ease the discomfort of the cold by understanding himself to be the atma. “I am the atma, I am Brahma.” But to no avail, Swamishri still felt the blistering cold. However, he started to remember a prasang of Yogiji Maharaj. Once, in Sarangpur, Yogiji Maharaj was doing pradakshina of Shastriji Maharaj’s old Smruti Deri. At one point, Yogiji Maharaj stopped walking, pointed towards the water tank, which is on the land behind the Smruti Deri, and said, “Shastriji Maharaj and I would walk across the muddy land from there to here.” Instantly, the cold was forgotten and Swamishri expressed his continuous state of happiness, in remembrance of his gurus. When narrating this incident, Mahant Swami Maharaj said,“This is the smruti that worked for me." Swamishri teaches that smruti is a means to forget the pains of the world and attach to the pure and eternal form of Bhagwan. By lovingly recollecting his guru’s prasang, Mahant Swami Maharaj was alleviated of his suffering

In 1993, Pramukh Swami Maharaj was in Kolkata. All of sudden, he started feeling dizzy. He was immediately brought to Mumbai for a medical checkup where the neurosurgeons recommended performing a brain scan. During the brain scan, several sensors and wires were attached to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s head, who was lying straight on the examination table. After 15 minutes and repeated attempts, the technician told the attendant sadhu, “I am not satisfied with the readings. Please request Pramukh Swami Maharaj to relax and calm his mind”. The attendant sadhu again explained the instructions to Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The second attempt was futile, with no improvement in the results. The technician again asked Pramukh Swami Maharaj to remain calm and free of thought. Then he tried for the third time. Yet again, the readings were not satisfactory. The technician was unable to complete the test and Pramukh Swami Maharaj then returned to the mandir. As he was departing to bed that night, the attendant sadhu explained that the doctor had called them back for the scan. Pramukh Swami Maharaj immediately refused. The attendant sadhu tried to stress how important it was to get the scan performed promptly to diagnose the illness. Pramukh Swami Maharaj bluntly refused saying, “It doesn’t matter how important it is. I am not taking that test again.” The attendant sadhu was shocked as to why Pramukh Swami Maharaj was being so adamant. He again tried to request Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This time Pramukh Swami Maharaj raised his voice a little and said, “I was calm the whole time. I was imagining myself sitting in the Akshar Deri in Gondal, meditating on Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Is that not calm enough?” Pramukh Swami Maharaj constantly remembers his gurus, Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj in all three states: awake, sleep, and dream. Maharaj and Swami are permanently etched in His mind and he can never be free from this thought.
