Full attendance of classes is required. Academic success of students is assessed at the end of each semester in the form of oral and/or written tests (students receive 'pass' 'fail') and examinations (marks according to a 10-point grading scale). Full-time students, who successfully pass exams, receive a scholarship if their study is free of charge.

The BSU coordinates the Erasmus-Mundus programme in Belarus, academic exchanges within the University Network of the Central-European Initiative. Every year University hosts informational conferences financed by such programmes as TEMPUS, VISBY, DAAD, IAESTE which are important to Belarusian HEIS on the whole. University has a number of international centres, among them are Information Centre of European Union, European Council Information Point, Center on UN Studies, Institute for German Studies, Belarusian-Vietnamese Innovation and Education Center and others.

In the second half of the 20th century new buildings of faculties were erected and new faculties were opened: the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Radio Physics and Electronics, Philosophy and Economics. Later on the Military and Humanities Faculties.
