What is an upstander?
An upstander is someone who recognises when something is wrong and acts to make it right. When an upstander sees or hears about someone being bullied, they speak up, and do their best to help, protect and support the person.
A friend says to you, "Your shirt is ugly."

How would you define cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is any bullying behaviour that takes place ‘virtually’ via many different devices and platforms. Unlike other forms of bullying, cyberbullying can happen at any time of day or night – whenever and wherever you or your friends have access to the internet.

Someone at school films a video of someone behaving inappropriately at a party. They send the video around school and you receive it. What do you do?
Report it to someone. This is a form of cyberbullying. It is important to be an upstander and step in. Don’t join in or support it by forwarding the post! Report it to a teacher or staff. You could talk to and offer support to the person in the video to let them know they are not alone.

People can find it easier to write hurtful things to others online than in real life. Without the visual and verbal cues you get from talking to another person face to face, you can often feel more powerful because you can be ‘anonymous’ online.
