Who is the founder of UNC Charlotte?

Bonnie E Cone:The Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC) was founded on September 23, 1946 as one of 14 evening colleges opened to serve veterans following World War II. 

  • In 1949 NC moved to close all the state’s college centers

  • However, Bonnie E. Cone, the University’s founder, and her supporters were keenly aware of the region’s need for public higher education and valiantly fought to keep the institution open. 

  • In a dramatic turn of events, Cone and her supporters succeeded and Charlotte College, which we now know as UNC Charlotte, was officially established that same year.

  1. Overall, high school has more restrictions and structure when it comes to the schedule of your school day. College provides more flexibility with how you set your schedule of classes. Thus, it is up to the student to create their own routine and structure to best support their academic success since it is not made for you anymore.

  2. Both high school and college have resources to help you academically, mentally, and physically. Use them!

  3. Both high school and college have end goals that help propel you professionally and personally. Use these end goals as your motivation to help push you forward. 


    • Class lessons will be more generalized in college due to large class sizes, so it will be important to participate in professor’s office hours, tutoring, etc. to receive additional academic support.

    • There are classes you might not want to take both in high school and college. Consider how you overcame those non interesting/challenging classes in high school and work similarly to that strategy in college.

    • Content in college will be more rigorous; thus, additional studying time will be required of you. Consider how and when you want to implement this study time.


    • The same way you made friends in high school(whether that was through clubs, jobs, classes) can be the same way you make friends in college.

    • There might be more times where you have to put yourself out there and network for social and professional purposes.

    • There are more opportunities to expand your social network and meet people of various backgrounds in college; work that to your advantage!

    • When it comes to joining student organizations and clubs, consider some that are based on your interests and strengths.
