The Coke slushie — a frozen, carbonated drink made from Coca‑Cola and other flavors — was first made in 1958 by Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen franchise owner in Kansas Wikipedia+1.
Knedlik’s story began when his soda machine broke down. Unable to serve drinks normally, he stored his sodas in his freezer, where they froze into a slushy texture. When he pulled them out, the sodas — including Coca‑Cola — had become a snow‑like, slushy form that still tasted like the original drink Wikipedia+1. He decided to sell this slush to his customers, and it quickly became popular.
Inspired by this “happy accident,” Knedlik built a slushie machine using an automotive air‑conditioning system to freeze flavor mix, water, and carbon dioxide. The machine kept the mixture turning so it wouldn’t solidify Wikipedia+1. Originally, he considered naming it “Scoldasice” (S’cold as ice), but with help from advertising professional Ruth E. Taylor, the name ICEE was chosen Flavorman.
By the early 1960s, Knedlik had patented his slushie machines and partnered with 7‑Eleven, which later renamed its version Slurpee Wikipedia+1. While the Coke slushie itself was part of the original ICEE product line, the Coca‑Cola flavor became one of its most iconic offerings.
