What is trichology?
Also known as fringe area; this is the triangular section that begins at the apex, or high point of the head, and ends at the front corners
What is the bang area?
The dead, colorless tissue attached to the natural nail plate
What is the cuticle?
An artificial covering for the head consisting of a network of interwoven hair
What is a wig?
A guideline that moves as the haircutting progresses, used often when creating layers or graduation
What is a travelling guideline?
The middle layer of the hair; a fibrous protein core formed by elongated cells containing melanin pigment
What is the cortex?
Also known as focus; the place in a hairstyle where the eye is drawn first before traveling to the rest of the design
What is emphasis?
Also known as onyx; this is the hard protective plate is composed mainly of keratin, the same fibrous protein found in skin and hair.
What is the natural nail?
Hairstyling that uses no chemicals or dyes and does not alter the natural curl or coil pattern of the hair

What is the apex?
The process by which newly formed cells in the hair bulb mature, fill with keratin, move upward, lose their nucleus, and die
What is keratinization?
The comparative relationship of one thing to another; the harmonious relationship among parts or things
What is proportion?
The thin layer of tissue that attaches the nail plate and the nail bed
What is the bed epithelium?
A small wig used to cover the top or crown of the head
What is a toupee?
These are points on the head that mark where the surface of the head changes or the behavior of the hair changes, such as ears, jawline, occipital bone, apex, and so on
What are reference points?
The part of the hair located below the surface of the epidermis
What is the hair root?
The outline of the face, head, or figure seen in a side view
What is the profile?
The part of the nail plate that extends over the tip of the finger or toe
What is the free edge?
A styling technique where the hair is double-strand twisted or coil twisted and wrapped around itself to make a knot. Knots are secured by bobby pins or elastic bands
What are bantu knots?
Combing a section away from its natural falling position, rather than straight out from the head, toward a guideline; used to create increasing lengths in the interior or perimeter
What is overdirection?
The oil glands in the skin that are connected to the hair follicles
What are the sebaceous glands?
Lines that are straight up and down; these create length and height in hair design
What are vertical lines?
The visible part of the matrix that extends from underneath the living skin; it is the whitish, half-moon shape at the base of the nail
What is the luluna?
This is hair that has been shed from the head or gathered from a hairbrush, as opposed to hair that has been cut
What is fallen hair?
The bone that protrudes at the base of the skull
