MISSING SWIMMER PROCEDURE
FACILITIES INCLUDING POOLS AND OPEN WATER:
The camp may not take any campers to swimming facilities that have not been contacted previous to the “outing”
and the camp’s presence approved. Approval means that the facility knows exactly when the campers and staff
will be there and have confirmed in writing that the facility has appropriate water safety staff and procedures to
accommodate our group and that they are licensed by the State Department of Public Health.
If at a non-camp swimming area a camper or staff member is determined missing, the Division Director is notified
immediately. The Division Director notifies the facility’s lifeguard/rescue team and follows their procedures. The
Division Director signals all campers and staff to come out of the water and gather in a pre-designated area by
blowing 3 times on his/her whistle and then voice instructions “Everyone out of the water.”
Campers and staff will be moved quickly to that area and attendance is taken.
The Division Director designates one senior counselor to go immediately to search the locker rooms, camp bus,
and adjacent recreation areas such as picnic grounds or play areas, and then report back to the facility’s
lifeguard/rescue team.
The Camp Director is called and informed of the missing camper. The Camp Director informs the Agency’s
Executive Director, and the Executive Director travels to the site.
If rescue operations are in process at the time campers have been designated to return to camp, one camp staff
member will be assigned to wait at the site until the Agency’s Executive Director arrives at the site.
Camp Counselors must be at all times
What is alert, engaged, and safety conscious
