Those that need a wheelchair to get around, those that have knee issues or recent knee surgery, back pain, or can't walk long distances. There is a big difference in those that WANT to VS those that NEED to. If you are unsure ask your head counselor.

What should you do if your camper wants to hug everyone or continually touches other campers or counselors. List 3 strategies. 

Remind them of appropriate boundaries, 3 second hugs, explain through visual, redirect to another activity.

During craft time, a camper ALWAYS asks you to draw their picture for them because "they can't do it right." How do you respond? 

Encourage them to, create an outline of the drawing for them to trace, assure them it doesn't have to be perfect.

Go to nurses station, or find a head counselor.

Do not ignore it. Ask and observe. If they are annoying others purposefully, move them away from that person and explain the importance of being a kind camper.

Tells them they don't deserve your attention, it models poor social connection, makes them feel unsafe or unsupervised, damages trust.  

Strong counselor-camper relationships are built on active listening and shared experiences. Glancing at notifications shows disinterest, making campers less likely to open up, trust your guidance, or participate fully in activities.

Prevents you from being present and aware of what they are going through.

My camper's file said they can shower, and use the bathroom independently but I noticed that they are smelly or that it's not getting done properly. What should I do? 

Depending on your campers the level of understanding address it and ask if they need help. You do not have to go into the stall with them but be close by!  Do not do something you are not comfortable with - find your head counselor!

A camper asks, why did my mom/dad/grandpa/grandma/dog die? How do you respond?

  • Listening first.
  • Being honest when you don't know.
  • Pray, remind them of the hope we have in Jesus.
  • If appropriate offer a hug or “I’m here for you, thank you so much for telling me”

Does my camper have to participate in the talent show? 

No, they do not HAVE to. Most really want to! If they have a hard time picking a talent or are nervous ask your head counselors for ways to help. Your camper may want you to participate with them, others do not.
