In this method, the letters stand for Stop, Think, Act, and Review.
What is the STAR method?
A personal blueprint or motto that expresses your values, goals, and what matters most to you.
What is a mission statement?
This mindset looks for a solution where both people can succeed.
What is win-win thinking?
In Habit 6, when people work together to create something greater than any individual could make alone, it is called this.
What is synergy?
What type of body language involves standing straight, keeping your feet planted, and not swaying?
What is good stance/posture?
A person who pauses, takes responsibility, and focuses on what they can control is being this.
What is proactive?
In a SMART goal, this letter means your goal has a clear deadline.
What is T for Time-Bound or Timely?
Listening with your eyes, ears, body, and heart is called this.
What is active listening?
Sleeping enough, exercising, and eating a balanced diet help you sharpen this part of yourself.
What is the body?
What is transitional movement, and why might a speaker use it?
Moving purposefully between points in a speech; it can show a transition, engage different parts of the audience, or add dramatic effect.
These are permanent, universal natural rules that can guide your life, such as honesty and fairness.
What are principles?
In Habit 3’s time management quadrants (the 4 quadrants), studying for a big test tomorrow when you have not started yet belongs in this quadrant
What is urgent and important (Quadrant 1)?
Change this “you” statement into an “I” statement: “Stop leaving your crumbs everywhere!”
Example: “I feel frustrated when crumbs are left out because I have to clean them up. Could you please clean up after eating?”
Ignorance, prejudice, self-righteousness, and negative peer pressure are all these.
What are roadblocks to synergy?
What does adding a pause after an important or surprising sentence do for your audience?
It gives them time to process the information, adds emphasis or suspense, and makes the moment stronger.
If you believe you can improve through effort, feedback, and learning from challenges, you have this kind of mindset.
What is a growth mindset?
In Habit 3’s time management quadrants (the 4 quadrants), planning for an essay due next week, exercising, and setting goals belong here.
What is important but not urgent (Quadrant 2)?
This kind of listening includes spacing out, pretending to listen, judging, or only listening to the words but not the tone.
What is passive listening?
Put the five steps of synergy in order: understand perspectives, define the problem, brainstorm solutions, choose the best solution, share your perspective.
1. Define the problem 2. Understand the other person’s perspective 3. Make sure they understand your perspective 4. Brainstorm solutions 5. Find the best solution for everyone
Why should a speaker’s facial expressions and body language match their voice and the topic?
It makes the speaker seem believable, helps show emotion, and keeps the audience engaged.
Your teammate blames you for losing a game. Give one proactive response using all of the STAR steps.
Example response:
I would stop and take a breath, think about what happened, then calmly say, ‘Let’s talk about what we can both improve next time,’ and reflect on whether that was the best decision.
You have a test tomorrow, homework, soccer practice, a project due next week, and an invitation to play video games. Explain: What are big rocks?Which tasks are your “big rocks” and what should you do first?
Example: The test, homework, soccer practice, and project are the big rocks because they connect to responsibilities and goals. Do the urgent homework/studying first, schedule time for the project, and save or skip video games if needed.
Keeping promises, apologizing sincerely, and showing small acts of kindness are all examples of these in an emotional bank account.
What are deposits?
Your group needs to plan a presentation, but everyone has different ideas. Explain how you could use synergy to create a better presentation than any one person could make alone.
Example: Listen to everyone’s ideas, use each person’s different strengths, brainstorm without criticizing, and choose a solution that works for the whole group.
What is character voice, and name three ways a performer can use it to make two characters sound different.
Character voice is the distinct voice given to each character. Change tone, pitch, speed, volume, facial expressions, or body language.
