Why do bad things happen to good people?
God gives humanity free will, and humans use that free will to cause suffering. Many natural disasters are caused by climate change. But God does not cause suffering but redeems it.

Like a history or science book.
We read it through faith given to us by the Holy Spirit to help understand the deepest mysteries of God, faith, and the universe, helping us understand why we are here and what God is doing in the world. We don't focus as much on truth (facts) but the deeper "truth" that these stories are pointing to.
Why did Jesus die on the cross?
To defeat the power of death and sin, to show God's love for us, to suffer with us and experience all of humanity even death, to show us how to live so that we take up our cross and suffer with those who suffer and live not for ourselves but for the oppressed.
Martin Luther famously said, "My conscience is captive to the word of God! To go against conscience is neither right nor safe. I therefore cannot, and I will not recant! Here I stand" at this famous church assembly.

How does God redeem our suffering?
God is able to create good things out of bad things. When we have suffered we are able to help others who are going through similar things. We become more empathetic and are able to connect with others in a deeper human level through our brokenness, and taking care of each other is the whole reason we are here. And out of brokenness come great beauty and connection and love.
Say the Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
