5 Models of the Church
The Church is defined in terms of its visible structures, especially the rights and powers of its hierarchy.
What is Institution?
Sacred tradition, Sacred Scripture, Magisterium and Deposit of Faith.
What is Ways of Understanding the Church?
Body of Christ, People of God and Temple of the Holy Spirit.
What is Images of Church?
Lead the parish, preside at liturgy, and administer the sacraments. They are ordained and preach the Word of God and teach the congregation.
What is a Priest?
Set apart for a special purpose by and for God.
What is Holy?
The strength of this model lies in its emphasis on spreading the Good News of the Gospel.
What is herald?
The word of God in the Bible, divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit.
What is Sacred Scripture?
Paul used this image to show unity in-diversity a human’s body parts are all different but work together as one.
What is Body of Christ?
Lays person, Priest, Bishop and Deacon.
What is an Organisation of Structure of Church today?
All its members are united by a set of common beliefs and mission.
This model is based on the ministry of Jesus, the Suffering Servant of God, who was a man who served others.
What is Servant?
Church leaders have the authority and responsibility to interpret the word of God, so its teaching is free from error for future generations.
What is Magisterium?
It was the Holy Spirit’s action that began the Church at Pentecost and the Spirit continues to dwell within the Church today.
What is Temple of Holy Spirit?
Preach, baptise, perform funerals and marriages, distribute Holy Communion, and read the Gospel.
What is a Deacon?
Holy, One, Catholic and Apostolic.
What is Four Marks?
The Church consists of people of faith who are united by their common participation in God’s Spirit through Christ.
What is Body of Christ?
The heritage of faith contained in sacred Scripture and Tradition, handed down to the Church by the apostles, and preserved by the magisterium.
What is Deposit of Faith?
All those who are called to follow Jesus and who are part of his Church.
What is People of God?
Successors to the apostles, teach and maintain the faith, govern the diocese, preside at worship.
What is a Bishop?
Greek meaning "universal". First used to describe the Church in the early 2nd century.
What is Catholic?
The strength of this model is that the Church is truly a sign and an instrument of grace to its members and to the world.
What is Sacrament?
Passing on the Gospels from the Apostles through each generation.
What is Sacred Tradition?
Make up the majority of the Church's membership and do most of its daily work in parishes. They are called to take a more active role in Church activities.
What is lays person?
Coming from the 12 apostles and the authority given to them by Jesus.
