What is a metaphor and why do we use them in an individual session?
Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an implicit comparison between two unlike entities.
Metaphor creates a new frame or altered frame on an old story or situation.
Metaphor helps the client entertain a new experience, reduces resistance to considering new ideas, stimulates thinking, meets the client at their model of the world, respects the communication of the client, and develops new resources from within.
Metaphor involves signs, symbols, rituals and everyday customs and objects.
Metaphors involve a word or idea which is used in place of another word or idea. It allows for transportation from one sensory modality to another (e.g. the tie was loud; it tasted like silk).
Metaphors are word pictures.

Themes are repeated sets of ideas, beliefs, and notions
Clinicians commonly encounter client themes of loss, betrayal, oppression, injustice, hopelessness, and despair, as well as companion themes of courage, persistence, survival, and resistance to oppression.
Patterns are repeated behavioral or affective sequences
Some common patterns observed in client stories include avoidance of intimacy, frequent angry outbursts, crying when anxious, addiction to substances or people, and picking inappropriate partners. We also note patterns such as choosing loyal friends, asserting oneself in adversity, protecting vulnerable others, and using spiritual resources.

How would you explain to a client why “Videotaping and Recording” is a limit of confidentiality?
“Often times a social worker needs to record/videotape a session for supervision pieces. This just helps me be able to provide the most effective services for you and helps make sure I am doing my job. However, I will never videotape or record without your knowledge or permission, because it is important that you feel safe and comfortable.

There are so many aspects of what you said that we could lose track if we try to consider them all at once. Could we explore them one at a time? (yes) Which one would you like to consider first? (or) Would it make sense to start with ________? That seems to be very important to you right now?
Role play a MIRACLE QUESTION for someone who is trying to leave an abusive relationship
“I have a strange, perhaps unusual question, a question that takes some imagination…”
“Suppose…”
“After we finish here, you go home tonight, watch TV, do your usual chores, etc., and then go to bed and to sleep . . .”
And, while you are sleeping, a miracle happens . . . [Pause. The context for this miracle is the client's normal, everyday life. This construction allows for any kind of fantastic wishing.]
“And, the problems that brought you here are solved, just like that! . . .”
But, this happens while you are sleeping, so you cannot know that it has happened."
"Once you wake up in the morning, a) how will you go about discovering that this miracle has happened to you?" OR, b) "how will your best friend know that this miracle happened to you?"
