First, the (relatively) good news: this state, home of the murder capital Ciudad Juárez, has clocked up 1,468 homicides so far this year—sickening, of course, but a substantial improvement on the 3,185 killings in all of 2010. Sinaloa, the next most violent state, has fallen from 2,028 killings in 2010 to 1,035 this year. And Baja California fell from 315 to 101. If present trends continue, each of these states should end the year with lower totals than last, for the first time since Mexico began its crackdown in 2007.
