What is an Observation
“Observation is a process used by early childhood educators to watch, listen to, and record children’s actions, facial expressions, body language, sounds, words, and gestures… Observation helps teachers get to know children so that they can build positive relationships with them.
What is Why should we do observations.
Deepen awareness and appreciation of children’s ongoing, meaningful discoveries
Adults not only begin to see a child differently, but they may also see the capabilities of all children differently
What is Anecdotal records
•short accounts of children’s behavior written while or soon after the behavior occurs.
• factual account of who, what, when, where
• interpretations or inferences
What is a running record
•Written observations that capture the details and sequence of children ’ s behavior
• Typically longer than anecdotal records

Tally of how often a certain behavior occurs
