This word refers to both the development of a social grouping and also the nature of the relationship among the members.
Community
This V&P states that while there are plenty of barriers to participation in society, CED focuses on hearing all voices and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Inclusion
These are fundamental parts of CED. They are defined as "justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society" AND "recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances."
Social Justice and Equity
Rational problem solving process to solve social problems (e.g. Needs assessment with unhoused peoples.)
Social Planning
Formal relationships, focused on a particular issue or mission. Unlikely to be legal obligations in place, but there will be clear expectations around task performance. contributions and conduct.
Alliances
This type of community refers to the sharing of physical space, and residents coming into contact with one another due to their close proximity.
Geographic
This V&P states that the will of the majority must be carried out after all voices are heard, and majority rights have been protected.
Democratic.
This V&P states that services should be connected, and work WITH each other. Instead of being fragmented, or duplicated.
Service Integration
Activity by one group on behalf of another relatively disadvantaged group. (e.g. advocating for community acceptance.)
Social Reform
Few expectations of members, no official obligations. These emerge due to the combining of people and activities, and are used to share ideas, tools and resources.
Networks
Also know as "communities within communities" These communities often have a specific purpose or concern.
Communities of Interest.
This V&P states that communities may seek advice from "experts", but consider it along with other sources of information and their own experience and make their own decisions that are right for them.
Community self-determination
This V&P states that services must be available to everyone without requiring means or needs testing.
Universality
Improving the well-being of local citizens through increased resources and facilities. (e.g. building a community centre)
Locality Development
These collaborations share both the risks and rewards of a business venture. A relationship in which the organizations share resources and responsibilities to achieve a common objective. They are formal relationships that are defined through a written agreement or contract.
Partnerships
These communities gather online, rather than face to face.
Virtual Communities
This V&P states that communities must take responsibility for their own assets, but also their own problems and issues.
Community Ownership
This V&P states that CED organizations must be as flat as possible, with all participants being seen as having equally important input.
Non-Authoritarian.
Effective schools & governments, lower crime, higher economic equality, greater tolerance. (e.g Creating places and opportunities for community engagement, activities, welcoming programs).
Social Capital Formation
Formal relationship between more than 2 organizations and potentially members which enables them to work together on a specific issue or project. This collaboration may have its own funds and staff. There are 3 main types.
Coalitions
2. THIS type of community enjoys broad community engagement, effective planning and a shared vision.
1. Healthy 2. Unhealthy
This V&P states that community developers should identify existing community assets and work with them.
Enhance natural capacities and networks
The V&P relates to the point of intervention when attempting to solve a problem. The root cause vs the symptom.
Upstream vs Downstream approach.
Identifying the gifts, skills, resources and abilities of community residents and focusing on those rather than needs or issues. (e.g. establishing co-operative businesses and new volunteer groups from community mapping projects.)
Asset-Based Community Development
When organizations collaborate entirely together. They take on a new identity as their own unique entity. They may have their own logo, staff and resources.
