What is DNA Replication? (yes I know this is not the standard jeopardy format)
The process where a cell duplicates one or more molecules of DNA
What is Transcription?
Transcription transcribes a section of DNA into RNA
What is translation?
The process of creating a sequence of amino acids.
Where does DNA Replication occur?
The Nucleus
What days are usually the summer solstice?
June 20th, 21st, or 22nd, depending on the year
How does DNA Replication work?
The DNA of the double helix unwinds and uses each strand as a template to create a complementary strand
What does Transcription produce?
an mRNA molecule (messenger RNA)
What is used to perform translation?
ribosomes, transfer RNA (tRNA).
Where does Transcription occur?
in the nucleus
(Approximately) how many steps does 1 person (on average) take in their entire lifetime?
216,262,500
(answers between 150mil and 250mil should get the points)
Why is DNA Replication necessary?
Because it makes sure the new daughter cells contain the same DNA as the parent cell
What is a template and a coding strand?
The template strand is transcribed and used as a template to create new strands (mRNA), and the coding strand uses the template strand to create what is being produced (a sequence of mRNA) by using the other strand as a template.
What is produced?
it produces proteins!
Where does translation occur?
in the ribosome in the cytoplasm
three
Name at least three of the necessary machinery needed for DNA Replication
DNA helicase, DNA polymerase, primase, ligase, topoisomerase
DNA polymerase finds the sequence of DNA and uses it to make the new complementary RNA strand
How does translation happen?
By the steps of: initiation, elongation, termination
What is the purpose of transcription?
It alters mRNA which codes for proteins. It is necessary because genes are not otherwise continuous in eukaryotic cells.
What is the loudest animal on earth?
the sperm whale
What is the initial and final products of DNA Replication
initial: a double stranded molecule
final: two identical strands that contain one parent (template) molecule and one daughter (new) molecule
What is the machinery needed for transcription to occur?
RNA polymerase has to attach by finding the promoter strand region on the DNA
(RNA Polymerase, promoter strand region, template/coding strands)
The amino acid building blocks (and the ribosome and tRNA as said earlier)
What is the purpose of Translation?
It uses mRNA to make proteins
What team won the first superbowl?
Green Bay Packers
